Why we Love the Quiet Season on San Juan Island
When the Summer is over, the leaves turn color and the Loons and Trumpeter Swans arrive once more for the Winter, San Juan Island returns to a slower pace. Uncrowded, dramatic beaches and Winter wildlife offer unrivaled solitude, while the small, sophisticated coastal town of Friday Harbor beckons with warm hospitality and amazing Autumn events centered around art, food and a sense of place.
Here are our favorite things to do during the quiet season on San Juan Island:
Farmers Market
Stroll through the bi-monthly Saturday Farmers Market at Brickworks. Find seasonal, island-made gifts, delicious, ready-to-eat food, fresh flowers, Fall fruit, pottery and more.
Sunset at the Whale Watching Park
Grab a picnic and the binoculars and head to Lime Kiln State Park for sunset. Sit by the historic light house, explore the whale watching platforms, find a lone picnic table high above the cliffs and let the end of the day unfold.
Author reading
Head down the street to cozy Griffin Bay Books for a hot chocolate and an author talk, before browsing for your next vacation read.
Birding at Cattle Point Lighthouse
With an 180 degree view of the Salish Sea and Sea Lion Rock at its feet, Cattle Point Lighthouse is the place to watch seabirds and raptors, sea lions and whales. Watch for the wintering White Snowy Owl, who hunts during the day and phenomenally competes with the haws and eagles.
Sip’n Sculpt or Stitch’n Bitch
Treat yourself to a community art class at Alchemy Art Center. Learn pottery over a glass of wine or join textile artists on the inter-island ferry for knitting and chatting.
Climb Mt Young
Immerse yourself in stunning Fall foliage amidst Gary Oaks, Madronas and old-growth Douglas Firs while ascending above Garrison Bay, the former site of a Coast Salish village and later English Camp. Soak in the rewarding views on top of all the other islands.
Themed Farm-to-Table Dinner
Every dinner at charming COHO Restaurant, just steps from our Friday Harbor hotel, is a seasonal, local delight. Don’t miss their holiday extravaganzas and themed wine dinners.
Storm Watching at South Beach
Lean into the wind, explore the prettiest pebbles and most gorgeous driftwood while the waves crash at your feet and the eagles fly over.
Pool & Spa Day at the Earthbox
Envelope yourself in the plush, cozy robes from your hotel room and explore Earthbox’s heated, indoor pool, oversized jacuzzi, sauna and exercise room before getting properly pampered at our cute, onsite Spa. Check out our lobby gift shop for extra treats and comforts.
BBQ at Jackson Beach
Find this lovely, crescent shape beach with picnic shelter, gorgeous native art, bbq’s, bathrooms, volleyball net and picnic tables just a mile from our hotel in Friday Harbor.
Family Art Days
Take a free family art class on Saturdays at the engaging Museum of Art, just a stone-throw from our comfy Inn. Create together as a family and open the world of possibilities for your kid.
Listen to Sea Lions at Third Lagoon
Find wooded and serene Third Lagon on the very south tip of the isle, a haven for nesting seabirds and other marine life. Listen to sea lions while sunning yourself in solitude on this weather-protected piece of paradise.
Friday Harbor Film Festival
From October 22 to October 26, 2026, downtown Friday Harbor transforms into a walkable Cannes as locals, directors, artists and audiences gather at various locations in town to take in the newest nature and social justice documentaries of our region. Indulge in the gala and award ceremony at the festive Community Theatre and treat yourself to dessert and cocktails in between screenings.
San Juan Island Sculpture Park
Open year-round, free and pup-friendly, this 20-acre art garden features interactive sculptures, poem-lined paths, hand-carved benches, a place where kids can make their own sculptures and a display of Tibetan Wishing Urns, you can leave a wish in. The nature setting - along beautiful Westcott Bay, a lake speckled with animal sculptures, whimsical bridges and peaceful Fall forests - is breathtaking.
