Family Fun on San Juan Island
On your family's San Juan Island vacation, you'll discover a natural playground to delight the young in years and young at heart. Great Beaches. Kayaking. Whale watching. Fishing. A skate park. Swimming. Cycling. Skimboarding. Exploring on Mopeds and 3-wheeled Scootcoupes. Younger kids? Rent a bicycle built for two or a double kayak. Ask our tuned-in, helpful staff at Earthbox for advice, directions, and special events.
Stroll down to the bustling Friday Harbor marina and treat the family to ice cream cones on the dock—take in the free Music at the Port on summer Sunday evenings and Friday afternoons. On Wednesday summer evenings, enjoy free music on the lawn of the Historical Society Museum (a short walk from Earthbox). Try "Shakespeare under the Stars" by Island Stage Left—free, fun, family-friendly entertainment (July and August).
Summer Saturdays bring special treats. At American Camp, soak up island history (military and natural) on the Pig War Story guided walk or a ranger-led prairie walk to South Beach. At English Camp, see a recreation of the island's early pioneer days with exhibitions of crafts (blacksmithing, for instance) and military skills and equipment, or on Sunday take a serious hike up Young Hill past the Royal Marine Cemetery for breathtaking views. (Frequent buses stop at both national parks.)
At the end of your exhilarating day, take a family dip in the pool at Earthbox Inn and Spa and count your vacation blessings.
